Paul Clark coaching profile

Coaching focus

I work with senior leaders navigating complex organisational environments, particularly those stepping into new roles or facing significant leadership challenges. My coaching helps leaders understand the systems they operate within — the incentives, expectations and stakeholder dynamics that shape behaviour — while also clarifying their own motivations, values and priorities.

Professional background

My approach as a coach is informed by my leadership roles at the Financial Times Group and over twenty years with the Boston Consulting Group. At BCG I led the London Insurance Practice for 10 years and was a core member of the People and Organization practice. In my work at BCG I focused on strategy, op-model design and transformation and worked closely with senior executives and Board members of leading insurers, banks, utilities and media companies.

Coaching approach

Through my experience I developed a strong interest in how leaders succeed at both a professional and personal level within organisations that are complex, politically nuanced and demanding. My coaching focuses on helping leaders develop their understanding of the system they operate in and the role they choose to play within it. Together we explore the strategic landscape of their organisation, the incentives shaping behaviours and the interests different stakeholders seek to protect. We then work through the practical choices that follow: what the priorities are, where to focus, how to build credibility, how to navigate key relationships and how to deliver change.

In parallel we explore the personal dimension of leadership. Many leaders find themselves navigating questions such as: What is important to me at this point in my career? How do I balance my own needs with the needs of the organisation? Where should I adapt to the organisation, and where should I hold my ground? Addressing these questions helps clients act with greater self-awareness, insight and authenticity, and enables more sustainable success.

My approach combines reflective coaching with the structured thinking developed during my years as a strategy consultant. We focus on real situations as they arise — moments where decisions matter, relationships are tested, or patterns repeat themselves. We seek to uncover and understand the psychological and emotional drivers that often explain observed behaviours.

Coaching outcomes

My goal as a coach is to help clients understand the system they operate within and to help them recognise the incentives, interests and dynamics shaping behaviours around them. I work with clients to clarify what matters most to them and to make decisions about what they do and how they do it in a way that is both effective and authentic.

My style is collaborative, thoughtful and practical. I see coaching as a partnership with clients to understand the situation and identify the best way forward. Clients bring their experience, judgement and ambition; I bring a supportive perspective, structured thinking and space for reflection.
