Paul Clark coaching profile

As an executive coach I bring broad experience from five years working for the Financial Times Group and over 20 years in consulting with the Boston Consulting Group. At BCG I led the Insurance Practice in London for 10 years and was a core member of the People and Organization practice. In addition to my consulting work at BCG, I served as a Career Advisor for junior consultants over a 15-year period, guiding them through the nuances of career progression and personal development.

My interest in personal growth and development has been a central theme throughout my career. I have pursued this through both academic studies and professional experience, ranging across philosophy, psychology, organisational effectiveness, and leadership. On a personal level, I have reflected on topics of enjoyment in work, purpose, balance and focus over an extended period of time and in particular as I have learnt to live and work with a chronic health condition. One issue has been the focus of much of my thinking: the fact so many people feel drained by their work. My experience has taught me that understanding, acceptance, a clear sense of purpose and the formation of helpful new habits are key to increased satisfaction with work and life.

Transitioning into coaching has been a natural progression for me, building on the rewarding experiences I had while coaching team members, career advisees and clients during my consulting years. I have experienced the benefit of being coached on various topics by several skilled professionals and gain great satisfaction from being able to help others in the same way.

My goal as a coach is to help clients:

  • Identify the unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour that are holding them back in their personal and professional relationships
  • Establish where the unhelpful patterns have come from, and which emotions and beliefs underpin them
  • Explore what clients value in work and life and what gives them energy and purpose
  • Build more helpful patterns that increase satisfaction with their lives and work.

My coaching approach focuses on building a strong working relationship, as I believe that progress hinges on mutual trust and a sense of teamwork. I adopt a client-centric approach, recognising that clients are best placed to understand themselves. I believe that clients already have both the motivation and the capacity to effect meaningful change within them, even if this is not always clear at first! I firmly believe that we have the tools and ability to affect positive change to a remarkable degree. While I offer frameworks and insights, it is important that clients feel full ownership of their own plan.

My coaching is informed by my experience within diverse and complex organisations, where I have seen leaders struggle with effectiveness and enjoyment. My approach is practical and pragmatic, focusing on clear insights and actions to create positive momentum, without unnecessary reliance on theory. This ensures a coaching experience that is forward-looking and grounded in the real-world, helping you to make tangible progress towards your goals.
